Ember of the Last Oak

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Ember of the Last Oak surprised me. I expected a quick mobile RPG and got something with real weight. You play a travelling healer who arrives at a village the world forgot, and the whole game is about slowly bringing it back — recruiting people, learning their stories, and fighting off the things in the woods when they come too close.

Combat is turn-based and leans on positioning more than raw numbers. Your party members have overlapping abilities, so a lot of the fun is figuring out combos rather than just hitting the strongest button. Progress saves cleanly between short sessions, which matters on mobile.

The writing is what elevates it. Characters remember what you said, side stories pay off hours later, and the ending earned the time I put in. It's a longer commitment than most phone games, but it's the kind you'll miss once it's over.
